Our Traditional Hybrids

We take great pride in the welfare and environment of our hens. Our hybrid birds are brought up traditionally in exactly the same way as our rare and heritage breeds and they come to our farm as day old chicks. We only use 2 selected Hatcheries for our standard hybrids which we have found to produce friendly robust birds that are proven large egg layers. We use these birds for our own egg laying so have first-hand experience of their excellent temperament and egg laying qualities.

What are Hybrid birds?

Hybrids are highly cross bred hens. Most hybrids are based around a relatively small number of breeds which are Rhode Island Red, Maran, Plymouth Rock, Sussex and Leghorns. The modern development of hybrid chickens started in the 1950s when there was a huge growth in the demand for eggs and meat. The most common hybrid type in the UK is the classic brown hen, which would have parentage based around the Rhode Island Red. Probably the most recognised ‘brand’ name would be the Warren. In recent years however there has been a move to create a larger variety of hybrids types that also have both good egg layer ability and the looks to match.

These are friendly and inquisitive birds and not at all flighty, they are a joy to keep. Having been brought up outdoors they are fully hardened to our weather in the north of England but are equally happy in a small coop.
