 Useful to know:

The Barred Plymouth Rock chicken traces its origins to early 19th-century New England, near the town of Plymouth. Bred from a cross between Black Javas and Dominique chickens, the result was a striking black-and-white barred plumage and a bird known for its dual-purpose value—excellent for both egg production and meat.

The breed was first showcased at a Boston poultry show in 1849 and quickly gained popularity across America, valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive in colder climates.

Barred Plymouth Rocks are easily identified by their distinctive barred feathers, single comb, clean legs, and four toes. Known for their calm and friendly temperament, they make a great addition to any backyard or farm flock.

While the barred variety is the most well-known, Plymouth Rocks also come in white and buff.

At our farm, Barred Plymouth Rock hens play an important role in gold-silver sex-linked breeding programs. By pairing a Rhode Island Red cock with a Barred Rock hen, we produce the Muirfield Black Rock Hybrid. These hens are maintained as a separate flock from those descended from Eddie Lovett’s original Barred Rocks, which contribute to the foundation of our traditional Muirfield Black Rock line.
